Conditions Detected Before Birth

Many neonatal surgical conditions are now identified on antenatal ultrasound scans, which allows a team — obstetrician, neonatologist, and pediatric surgeon — to plan delivery and immediate care in advance. These include conditions such as intestinal blockage, a diaphragm defect allowing abdominal organs into the chest, and abdominal wall defects where organs develop outside the body. Warning Signs After Birth

Not every condition is caught antenatally. Parents and NICU families should know the specific signs that mean a newborn needs immediate medical attention:

• Repeated vomiting, especially if it is green or bile-stained — this is never normal in a newborn and always needs urgent assessment
• A swollen, tense, or discoloured abdomen
• Failure to pass the first stool (meconium) within the first 24–48 hours of life
• Feeding refusal combined with distress, especially alongside any of the above

Why These Need Immediate Attention

Conditions like intestinal blockage can compromise blood supply to the bowel if not treated promptly, and delay increases both the complexity of surgery and the risks to the baby. This is why these signs are treated as true emergencies rather than "wait and see" situations, even in a baby who otherwise looks well.

Depending on the specific condition, treatment may range from a relatively contained procedure to more complex staged surgery with a period of intensive care support.
