Hypospadias — The Birth Condition Every Parent Should Recognise Early

Hypospadias is one of the most common birth conditions in boys, present in roughly 1 in every 200–300 male births — yet many parents have never heard the word until it's used to describe their own newborn.

What Is Hypospadias?

In hypospadias, the opening through which urine passes is not at the very tip of the penis, but somewhere along its underside — anywhere from just below the tip to, in more severe cases, further down the shaft or near the base. It is present from birth and is a variation in how the urethra completed its development before delivery.

How It's Noticed

Hypospadias is usually identified at the newborn examination in hospital, or very soon after, when the position of the opening is checked as a routine part of the exam. In mild cases it can occasionally be missed initially and noticed later by a parent.

Types and Severity

• Mild (distal) — the opening is near the normal position, close to the tip
• Moderate — the opening is along the mid-shaft
• Severe (proximal) — the opening is closer to the base, sometimes with associated curvature of the penis (chordee)

Severity guides both the timing and the surgical approach — most mild-to-moderate cases are corrected in a single operation, while some severe cases need a staged repair over two procedures.

Why Timing of Surgery Matters

Surgical correction is typically performed between roughly 6 months and 2 years of age — old enough for safe anaesthesia and good tissue healing, but early enough that the child has no memory of the procedure and normal function develops from early childhood.

What the Surgery Achieves

The goals of hypospadias repair are to reposition the urinary opening to the tip, straighten any curvature, and allow the child to urinate standing up in a normal stream, and — in adulthood — normal sexual function. Outcomes are generally excellent when repair is done at the right age by an experienced pediatric urologist.

After Surgery

Recovery typically involves a temporary urinary catheter for a short period and simple pain relief. Follow-up continues through childhood to confirm normal healing and function as the child grows.
