Introduction
High blood pressure (hypertension) affects millions of people worldwide. Most of the time, hypertension is managed with medication and lifestyle changes. However, sometimes blood pressure rises to dangerously high levels and requires immediate medical attention.
If your blood pressure reading is above 180/120 mmHg with symptoms β go to the emergency room immediately or call +91-8282 8989 18.
What Is Hypertensive Emergency?
A hypertensive emergency occurs when blood pressure rises to extremely high levels (typically above 180/120 mmHg) AND there is evidence of organ damage. The organs most commonly affected include the brain, heart, kidneys, and eyes.
Symptoms of hypertensive emergency:
- Severe chest pain
- Sudden severe headache
- Shortness of breath
- Blurred vision or sudden vision loss
- Confusion or altered consciousness
- Weakness or numbness in face, arm, or leg
- Difficulty speaking
- Decreased urine output
What Is Hypertensive Urgency?
Hypertensive urgency also involves very high blood pressure (above 180/120 mmHg) but WITHOUT evidence of acute organ damage. The patient may feel unwell but does not have the severe symptoms listed above.
Key Differences
- Emergency β organ damage present, requires ICU and IV medications immediately
- Urgency β no organ damage, blood pressure can be lowered gradually over hours with oral medication
