Introduction
Asthma flareups happen when your airways become more swollen and narrow. This makes it hard to breathe. During winter, asthma flareups can become more frequent and severe. Cold, dry air is a well-known trigger for asthma attacks.
Why Does Winter Worsen Asthma?
- Cold, dry air β irritates and dries out the airways
- Indoor allergens β dust mites, pet dander, and mould increase indoors during winter
- Viral infections β colds and flu are more common in winter and trigger asthma
- Wood smoke and pollution β from fires and burning can irritate airways
- Less outdoor exercise β staying indoors increases allergen exposure
Symptoms of an Asthma Flareup
- Wheezing (whistling sound when breathing)
- Shortness of breath
- Tight feeling in the chest
- Persistent coughing, especially at night or early morning
- Difficulty speaking in complete sentences
- Bluish lips or fingertips (severe β seek emergency care immediately)
Emergency Signs β Seek Immediate Help
Call +91-8282 8989 18 immediately if: breathing is very difficult, the person cannot speak, lips or fingernails turn blue, or the rescue inhaler is not working.
Prevention During Winter
- Cover your mouth and nose with a scarf in cold air
- Breathe through your nose (warms and humidifies air)
- Keep your home warm and well-ventilated
- Use an air purifier to reduce indoor allergens
- Wash bedding weekly in hot water
- Get vaccinated against flu every year
- Avoid exposure to smoke β both active and passive
Management
Always carry your rescue inhaler. Take your preventer (controller) medication every day as prescribed even when you feel well. Follow your Asthma Action Plan. Review your inhaler technique with your doctor β incorrect technique is one of the most common reasons for poor control.
