What Are Asthma Flareups?

Asthma flareups β€” also called asthma attacks or exacerbations β€” are episodes when asthma symptoms suddenly get worse. During a flareup, the airways become inflamed, swollen, and produce extra mucus. This makes breathing very difficult. Flareups can range from mild to life-threatening.

Common Triggers

Recognising Severity

Mild flareup: Mild wheeze, able to speak full sentences, responds to rescue inhaler within 20 minutes.

Moderate flareup: Noticeable wheeze, only able to speak partial sentences, rescue inhaler provides partial relief.

Severe flareup: Severe difficulty breathing, cannot complete sentences, rescue inhaler not helping, respiratory rate above 30/minute.

Life-threatening: Silent chest (no wheeze β€” because no air is moving), cyanosis, exhaustion, confusion β€” call emergency services immediately: +91-8282 8989 18

Diagnosis

Asthma is diagnosed with: detailed medical history and symptom pattern, spirometry (lung function test), peak flow measurement, allergy tests, and chest X-ray to rule out other conditions.
