Appendix Surgery — What Actually Happens From ER to Discharge

Appendicitis rarely announces itself clearly. It usually starts as vague discomfort and becomes an emergency within hours.

How Appendicitis Typically Presents

The classic pattern — though not universal — is pain that starts as a dull ache near the navel, then shifts and sharpens over several hours to the lower-right abdomen. It is often accompanied by:

• Loss of appetite
• Nausea or vomiting
• Low-grade fever
• Pain that worsens with movement, coughing, or pressing on the lower-right abdomen

Step 1: Evaluation in the Emergency Room

On arrival, you will be examined, and blood tests are usually done to check for signs of infection. Imaging — typically an ultrasound or CT scan — helps confirm the diagnosis and rule out other causes of abdominal pain, since several conditions can mimic appendicitis.

Step 2: The Decision for Surgery

Once appendicitis is confirmed, surgical removal of the appendix (appendectomy) is the standard treatment, usually performed as soon as reasonably possible to reduce the risk of the appendix rupturing.

Step 3: The Surgery Itself

Most appendectomies today are performed laparoscopically, through a few small incisions, under general anaesthesia. The procedure itself is usually quick, and laparoscopic removal generally means less pain and a faster recovery than open surgery, though open surgery may be needed in complicated or advanced cases.

Step 4: Recovery and Discharge

For an uncomplicated laparoscopic appendectomy, many patients go home within a day or two. You will be advised on wound care, gradual return to activity, and warning signs to watch for at home — similar to any post-surgical recovery.

What If the Appendix Has Already Ruptured?

A ruptured appendix means infection has spread into the abdominal cavity, requiring more extensive surgery, a longer hospital stay, and a course of antibiotics. This is exactly why acting on worsening abdominal pain quickly — rather than waiting to see if it settles — makes a real difference to how straightforward the treatment is.
