Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

Thoracic Surgery

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a common yet serious condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the force of blood against the artery walls remains too high for a prolonged period. If left untreated, it can lead to severe health complications like heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, and vision loss.

What Causes High Blood Pressure?

Several factors can contribute to hypertension, including:

  • Unhealthy Diet – High salt, processed foods, and excess sugar intake
  • Lack of Physical Activity – A sedentary lifestyle weakens the heart and increases blood pressure
  • Obesity – Excess weight puts extra strain on the heart
  • Stress – Constant stress can cause temporary spikes in blood pressure
  • Smoking & Alcohol – Both can damage blood vessels and raise blood pressure
  • Family History – Genetic factors may increase the risk
  • Underlying Conditions – Kidney disease, hormonal disorders, and certain medications

Signs & Symptoms

Hypertension is often called the “silent killer” because it usually shows no symptoms until complications arise. However, in some cases, people may experience:

  • Frequent headaches
  • Dizziness or blurred vision
  • Chest pain or shortness of breath
  • Nosebleeds
  • Fatigue or confusion

Diagnosis & Treatment

A simple blood pressure check is the best way to diagnose hypertension. If readings consistently show 140/90 mmHg or higher, it is considered high.

Managing Hypertension:

  • Healthy Diet – Reduce salt, eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
  • Regular Exercise – At least 30 minutes of moderate activity daily
  • Weight Management – Maintain a healthy weight
  • Stress Reduction – Practice meditation, yoga, or relaxation techniques
  • Medication – If needed, doctors may prescribe medicines to control blood pressure

Why Early Detection Matters?

Controlling hypertension early helps prevent heart attacks, strokes, kidney damage, and other life-threatening complications. Regular checkups and lifestyle changes can make a significant difference in managing high blood pressure.
